Newborn Photography Tips and Tricks

When people look at my newborn photos, they often wonder how I am able to take perfect photographs of these tiny little things. These soft, cuddly, beautiful peeing, pooping, crying creatures.  LOL.   The end result may look like perfection.  Perfect poses, perfect props, angelic sleeping babies, and sometimes even being able to capture a smile!  But newborn photography is not as easy as it looks.  There are certain tips and tricks that make the process look easier than it is.

It’s All About the Timing:

Generally speaking, it is best to get newborn photography done within two weeks after your sweet buddle of joy is born.  This ensures, all those cutesy newborn poses will work more successfully. See my article on What to Think About When Booking a Newborn Photography Session.  It mentions the best time to schedule a session, as well as safety procedures. Before that two week timeline, babies are more flexible and typically have less baby acne.  Not to mention that when they are less than two weeks old they pretty much eat, sleep, and poop. They are more tolerable of having their photos taken.

What if I Can’t Get a Session During that Time?

While before the two week mark is ideal…life happens.  The poses may not be as easy, and your baby may not have the classic newborn photography look, but we can still work around it.  Three to six weeks is still a good time for newborn photography, especially for preemies, multiples, or NICU babies.

The Babies are Running the Show, Be Flexible:

As much as you or I may want certain poses, or shots…the babies are running the show.  Some things to consider:

·      If you want naked cute little butt shots, loosen the diaper ahead of time so there are not lines.

·      Your sweet baby will need feeding breaks as we go through the session.  That being said, it is helpful to feed your baby right before the session so that they are full and ready to sleep!

·      Peeing and pooping will happen, and that is OK. Have extra wipes, etc. nearby, as well as a few extra outfits and be patient.

·      If siblings are coming, make sure to bring entertainment for them.

·      Have fun, and know that as your photographer I am part of your team.  We will work together to get the best newborn session possible!
