Why “Save The Dates” Are So Important

With e-mail, Instagram, and Facebook just a few button clicks away, it’s easier than ever to announce your engagement to family and friends, co-workers, and - if you’re anything like me – just about anyone else who will read or listen. But I wouldn’t dismiss the idea of creating beautiful save the dates just yet! Having a beautiful, colorful, tangible piece of evidence of your love is invaluable for so many reasons, let alone the fact that it’s a really fun and personal part of the process, too.

Here are just a few of the reasons why save the dates are so important:

·       You get to meet and get comfortable with your photographer ahead of time

Your photographer will be with you for hours on your wedding day, and unless you’re one of those rare unicorn people known as Instagram models, you’re probably not used to someone taking professional pictures of you all day. Spending some time with your photographer ahead of time is crucial to making this a more comfortable experience when the special day finally arrives. You want to know that you get along with them on a personal level, that they can capture the real love between you and your other half, and that they’ll offer personalized suggestions to create the best possible pictures just for you. The best way to accomplish this goal is to schedule an engagement session and spend an hour or two talking, laughing, and creating something beautiful together.

·       It’s an opportunity to practice being in front of the camera

The same way it’s important for you to be comfortable with your photographer, it’s also important for you to get comfortable with the camera they’re carrying. If you’re shy or feel awkward about picture taking, an engagement session can help you get over these feelings. You and your significant other will be the center of attention from start to finish on your wedding day, so this is a great opportunity to get some practice, and identify styles that you like or dislike.

·       It allows out-of-state guests to plan further ahead

If you have older or out-of-state friends or relatives traveling for the wedding, it may be difficult for them to plan the trip if they only receive the wedding invitation six to eight weeks before the big event. Sending save the dates provides a fun and festive reminder to harder to reach guests about six to eight full months before the wedding instead. As an added bonus in this category, creating a personalized save the date or taking your pictures in a location that is special to you and your significant other gives anyone who doesn’t know them that well yet an adorable glimpse of the personality of your relationship.

·       Friends and family members will treasure them forever

Close your eyes and imagine the moment that your significant other asked you to spend the rest of your life with them… You’ve been on cloud nine ever since, and now it’s time to share some of those butterflies with your loved ones, too. Your parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends are excited to celebrate your love too, and what better way to get them even more excited and marking their calendars than sending a sweet, thoughtful save the date card, complete with an absolutely gorgeous shot of the future Mr. and Mrs.?
