The day is finally here.  You’ve been meticulously planning everything for the past year.   The venue, the flowers, the gorgeous beaded dress, the vintage heirloom earrings that belonging to your grandmother… everything is just the way you imagined it.    You are so excited to finally walk down the aisle and say yes to the love of your life.  You check the weather the week of, and it looks like sunny skies and comfortable temperatures in the mid 70’s.  You wake up the morning of, ready to take on the day!  But what is this, the weather person lied…it is raining.  Hard.  Not romantically sprinkling…it is freaking pouring.

For many brides, this is the classic day of the wedding nightmare.  And while there are so many aspects of wedding planning that can go wrong due to human error- weather, of course, is not something we have control over.  Sooo rather than letting it potentially ruin your day, have in the back of your wedding planning mind that rain is, in fact, always a possibility. Say and repeat, “I will not stress and obsess about the things I cannot control.”  When looking at planning purposes, here are some factors regarding dealing with unfortunate weather that you can control:

  • Your stress:  We cannot control the circumstances around us, but we can control the way we respond to things happening around us.  I always try to remember this when I am getting over-stressed or feel my emotions spiraling like a tornado.  I can control my attitude.  So, take a deep breath, and don’t let a potential storm wreak havoc on your special day.

  • As the person who creates the visual imagery of your love, I like to plan ahead.  Therefore, do not fret beautiful brides- I always have umbrellas and clear plastic to stand on, should Mother Nature decide to shed a few happy wedding tears.

  • For a day when you want to look your best and you’ve planned out everything: your dress, your shoes, earring, veil, etc.… bring a pair of backup shoes just in case!

  • There can be something whimsical and utterly romantic about rain.  It can create some absolutely stunning, storybook photographs and spontaneous moments.  If you are feeling it, embrace the rain and fix your hair later!

  • If you are worried about the rain, during your planning process, take time to consider your venue.  Does it include some sheltered areas that could be potentially used for wedding party portraits?  Consider awnings, gazebos, porches, and even trees.  Ask the venue what options they offer when there is inclement weather.  You may be surprised and relieved with what they have in place.
